Dr. Mario Alejandro Schitter, who treated Argentine football legend Diego Armando Maradona for two decades, revealed new details in his testimony on Tuesday before a court in Buenos Aires, as part of the trial of seven members of the medical staff accused of negligence that led to the death of the famous star, indicating that the latter should have been transferred to a rehabilitation center instead of being sent home after the surgery he underwent in 2020.

Maradona, who led Argentina to victory in the 1986 World Cup, died on November 25, 2020, while receiving home healthcare in the suburbs of Buenos Aires. He was 60 years old.

Dr. Mario Alejandro Schetter, who treated Maradona for two decades, told the court: "He should have been transferred to a rehabilitation center... to a place that was more protective of him.".

Sheeter added: “Knowing the patient, I would not have recommended home treatment. He was not easy to deal with, and I say this based on my direct experience treating him during the worst moments of his life,” referring to his treatment for drug addiction.

According to the prosecution, the seven defendants in the case – a neurosurgeon, a psychiatrist, a psychologist, and several doctors and nurses – failed to provide proper care, which may have led to Maradona's death.

Schetter explained that he was working as a medical consultant and did not have decision-making authority, and some witnesses stated during the trial that the house to which Maradona was transferred was not equipped with the necessary medical equipment.

Schetter, who was also present at Maradona's autopsy, said, "All the evidence points to a failure to provide modifiable care, which led to cardiac failure.".

The trial is expected to continue until July, and the court is expected to hear from 100 witnesses in the case.
