Medical warnings and refereeing objections precede the Egyptian Cup final

The board of directors of the Egyptian Football Association, headed by Engineer Hani Abu Rida, decided to amend the start time of the Egypt Cup final match

The board of directors of the Egyptian Football Association, headed by Engineer Hani Abu Rida, decided to amend the start time of the Egypt Cup final match between Zamalek and Pyramids to 8:30 AM Mecca time, in consideration of the match coinciding with the Maghrib prayer time on the eve of Eid al-Adha, instead of the previously scheduled time of 8:00 AM Mecca time.

The highly anticipated match will take place on Thursday evening, June 5, 2025, at Cairo International Stadium, and is expected to draw a large crowd due to the great interest in the final, which brings together two of the season's top rivals.

The timing of the match, immediately after Iftar (the breaking of the fast), sparked widespread controversy in medical and sporting circles. Dr. Ayman Farid, Zamalek's former team doctor, warned of the repercussions of strenuous physical activity so soon after breaking the fast. He pointed out that the body needs about three and a half hours to digest food and restore its physical balance, calling for the match to be postponed by an hour to ensure physical readiness and reduce the risk of injuries.

On the organizational front, a source within the Egyptian Football Association revealed that the Referees Committee has decided to appoint international referee Mohamed El-Hanafy to officiate the final, a move the association considers a tribute to the veteran referee before his retirement. Meanwhile, Zamalek SC sent an official letter to the association rejecting the appointment of several referees, including Amin Omar, Mahmoud El-Banna, Mohamed El-Sabahy, and Tarek Magdy, protesting what they described as "repeated refereeing errors" throughout the season.

As part of the session's decisions, the board of directors approved the participation of this season's Women's League champion in the next edition of the CAF Women's Champions League (2025–2026). The board also endorsed the recommendation of the Third Division Competitions Committee to remove player Moataz Bellah Abdel Nabi, a player for Qaha Youth Center, from the league.

• The final path

Zamalek reached the final after defeating Abu Qir Fertilizers (2-0), Modern Sport (2-1), and Smouha (4-2), before overcoming Ceramica Cleopatra in the semi-final with a 2-1 victory thanks to a last-minute goal by Zizo. Pyramids, meanwhile, secured their place in the final with consecutive wins against Mansoura (3-0), Al Mokawloon Al Arab (2-0), Enppi (2-1), and a resounding 4-0 victory over National Bank of Egypt.

It is worth noting that Zamalek is seeking to achieve its 29th title in the history of the Egypt Cup, while Pyramids hopes to win its second title in a row, in a repeat of the 2019 final, which the White team won with a clean 3-0 victory.

In a crucial match at Al-Taawoun Club Stadium in Buraidah, Al-Taawoun secured a strategic and valuable victory over Al-Akhdoud with a score of 1-0, in the 19th round of the Saudi Professional League. The lone goal was scored by Mohammed Al-Qahtani in the 58th minute, earning his team three precious points and strengthening their position in the race for the top spots.

The context of the match and its importance in the league

This match comes amidst an exceptional season for the Saudi Professional League, which has garnered global attention thanks to its attraction of international stars and its high level of competition. Al-Taawoun entered the match aiming to solidify its position among the top five and strongly compete for a spot in the AFC Champions League, a primary objective for the club this season. Meanwhile, Al-Akhdoud, newly promoted to the Professional League, is embroiled in a fierce relegation battle, where every point represents a lifeline in their fight to remain in the top flight. This contrast in ambitions has given the match added significance for both teams.

Details and events of the meeting

The first half began with Al-Taawoun, the home team, enjoying a slight advantage, attempting to impose their rhythm early on in search of an early goal to settle their nerves. Despite their dominance, Al-Akhdoud nearly snatched the lead from a counter-attack in the 15th minute when German player Khaled Nari unleashed a powerful shot that deflected off a defender and went out for a corner. Just five minutes later, Al-Akhdoud had a golden opportunity to open the scoring from the penalty spot, but the outstanding Brazilian goalkeeper, Maëlson dos Santos, brilliantly saved Nari's shot, preserving his clean sheet and keeping the score level.

As the second half began, Al-Taawoun intensified their attacking pressure, clearly determined to secure the victory. The first real chance came in the 47th minute when Ecuadorian Christopher Zambrano's shot struck the post. Minutes later, their sustained pressure paid off with the winning goal. In the 58th minute, a well-coordinated attack saw a cross find Mohammed Al-Qahtani, who calmly slotted it past Brazilian goalkeeper Samuel Lima to give Al-Taawoun the lead. Al-Akhdoud tried to get back into the game, squandering a golden opportunity to equalize through Ghassan Hawsawi in the 65th minute. Meanwhile, Al-Taawoun continued their search for a second goal to seal the win, but goalkeeper Lima's brilliance kept them at bay on several occasions.

Impact of the result on the league standings

With this victory, Al-Taawoun, despite missing some key players, raised their points tally to 38, strengthening their hold on fifth place and continuing to put pressure on the top four teams. Al-Akhdoud, on the other hand, remain stuck on nine points in second-to-last place, further complicating their relegation battle. This win underscores Al-Taawoun's strong character and their ability to secure crucial points, even in tough matches, making them a formidable contender in the domestic league.

In exclusive statements to Al-Midan Al-Riyadi following the match, Mohammed Al-Qahtani said: “Praise be to God for today’s victory and securing the three points, important points on our home ground. God willing, we will continue working in this manner to improve our position in the Professional League standings this season.” Al-Qahtani, who scored the only goal of the match, added that this victory reflects the team’s fighting spirit and its determination to compete for a top position.

The importance of winning in the context of competition

This victory comes at a crucial stage of the league, as all teams strive to accumulate as many points as possible to improve their positions in the standings. For Al-Taawoun, nicknamed "The Sugar of Qassim," these three points represent a significant boost in their fight to compete for one of the top four spots that qualify for Asian championships – a legitimate ambition for a club that has consistently delivered outstanding performances in recent years.

This season's Roshan League is witnessing unprecedented competition, thanks to the influx of top international football stars, which has raised the technical and physical level of the tournament and made every match a major challenge. Shomodica blames bad luck after Al-Akhdoud's loss to Al-Taawon in the Roshan League

Romanian Marius Shumudica, coach of Al-Akhdoud club, expressed his dissatisfaction with the loss to Al-Taawon, stressing that his team wasted 18 clear chances and that the result was not fair.

Al-Akhdoud coach Marius Szumudica

Romanian Marius Shumudica, the technical director of Al-Akhdoud Club, expressed his extreme dissatisfaction and regret after his team’s defeat against their host Al-Taawon by one goal to nil, in the match that brought them together on the grounds of King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Buraidah, as part of the competitions of the nineteenth round of the Saudi Professional League for the 2023-2024 season.

During the post-match press conference, a furious Shomudica stated, “It’s unfair that we lost today. We missed a penalty and had 18 clear-cut chances to score. In the first half, Al-Taawoun didn’t manage a single shot on target, yet they still managed to score.” He added, “After the substitutions we made, our performance improved in the second half, and Al-Taawoun managed to launch some attacks, but if we had converted any of the numerous opportunities we had, the entire game would have been different. But that’s football, and it seems luck was on Al-Taawoun’s side today.”.

Impact of the result on the league standings

The only goal of the match came from Mohammed Al-Qahtani, securing three valuable points for Al-Taawoun and strengthening their position in the top four of the Roshan League standings. With this victory, the "Sugar Boys of Qassim" continue their positive run this season, reinforcing their ambitions to compete for a spot in the AFC Champions League next season. On the other hand, Al-Akhdoud's points tally remains frozen after suffering their second consecutive defeat, following their loss to Al-Ittihad 2-1 in the previous round. This further complicates their situation in the fight to avoid relegation, especially as they are playing their first-ever season in the professional league.

Context of the confrontation and its importance

This match is particularly significant as it pits two teams with contrasting ambitions against each other. Al-Akhdoud, recently promoted from the Yellow League, is determined to establish itself among the elite and avoid a swift return to the First Division. To achieve this goal, the club's management has enlisted the expertise of Romanian coach Shumudica, known for his strong personality and previous experience in Saudi football with clubs such as Al-Shabab and Al-Raed. Al-Taawoun, on the other hand, has become a formidable force in the league in recent years, consistently delivering performances that make them perennial contenders for top positions. This makes the match a significant challenge for the team from Najran.

Shumudica's comments reflect the frustration gripping Al-Akhdoud, a team that performs well in many matches but suffers from a lack of attacking efficiency and squanders easy chances, costing them valuable points they may regret at the end of the season. With the competition intensifying at the bottom of the table, Shumudica and his players will need to find quick solutions to their finishing problem if they want to secure their place in the top flight.
