Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior insisted on Friday that Cole Palmer is “happy” at the club, despite reports that the 23-year-old is homesick for Manchester.
Palmer, who was born in Manchester, moved to Stamford Bridge in 2013 from Manchester City and quickly established himself as a Blues star during his first two seasons in London. However, a series of injuries this season have limited his impact.
“I’ve had a lot of talk with Cole, and he seems very happy to be here,” said Rosenior, 41, who replaced Enzo Maresca.
“He is a key part of our long-term plans. He is a top player. Every player goes through difficult periods in their career with injuries. That doesn’t diminish his quality in any way.”
Palmer scored a penalty and played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Brentford last weekend. But the England international missed Wednesday's 1-0 Champions League win over Cypriot side Pafos with a thigh injury.
Palmer has returned to training and is a strong candidate to feature against Crystal Palace on Sunday. However, Rossinior indicated he will have to reduce Palmer's playing time until he regains full fitness.
"My job, and the club's job, is to help him get to a level where he can consistently perform at the level he wants to,"
he said. "There was frustration in the Brentford game, not because he wasn't happy, but because he was in pain and couldn't perform the way he wants for the club. He's a fantastic player, but we have to make sure we look after him properly. That's why I didn't play him in the last game."
Chelsea are sixth in the league with 34 points, one point behind fifth-placed Manchester United and just two points behind fourth-placed Liverpool in the race for Champions League qualification.
