Blue waste: The dangers of unchecked financial spending in sports clubs
An analytical article by writer Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman discusses the concept of blue waste in sports, and the impact of random spending and lack of governance on the sustainability of clubs and the balance of competition.

In the modern world of sports economics, the criteria are no longer limited to the prestige of names or high-profile deals; rather, the language of numbers and financial strength has become the true measure of success. In this context, writer Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman, in his article "Blue Waste," raises a thorny issue concerning the spending mechanisms of some sports clubs, describing the situation as a stark paradox where a team swims in a sea of uncontrolled spending, raising fundamental questions about governance and sustainability.
General context: Sports as an industry, not just a hobby
This critical perspective comes at a time when the sports sector, both locally and regionally, is undergoing radical transformations aimed at turning sports from a mere recreational activity into a fully integrated investment industry. With governments and international federations moving towards enforcing Financial Fair Play regulations and promoting privatization, the financial conduct of clubs is coming under intense scrutiny. The issue raised in this article is not limited to a specific club, but rather touches the very core of the sports system, which is striving to shed the burden of accumulated debt and emotional spending that lacks a sound economic feasibility study.
The concept of “blue waste” and the drain on the treasury
The author links the term “blue ink” to a financial concept known as “blue ink,” the code used in financial reports to sign off on expenditures and commitments that actually leave the treasury. The danger arises when these commitments become a continuous drain without generating corresponding returns. The article points to a vicious cycle that begins with expensive recruitment deals and ends with even more costly financial settlements to terminate the contracts of the same players, as if public funds were merely a minor detail in an unchecked ledger.
Economic impact: market inflation and lack of fairness
The effects of this waste are not limited to the club's budget; they extend to create profound distortions in the entire sports market. Uncontrolled spending leads to:
- Salary inflation: Players' financial demands have risen to a level that is disproportionate to their true market value.
- Competitive imbalance: Competition shifts from a race for efficiency and good management to a bidding war based on the ability to withstand losses, which harms the principle of equal opportunities between clubs.
- Postponing infrastructure: Every riyal wasted on an ill-conceived deal is a lost opportunity to develop infrastructure or support youth academies, which are the true source of the future.
Governance and transparency: the lifeline
The author asserts that the solution lies in implementing rigorous governance mechanisms. Modern sports are not solely based on public enthusiasm; they require a rigorous oversight system, regular disclosure, and performance indicators that measure financial and technical impact before focusing on media headlines. A lack of transparency opens the door to speculation and undermines the trust of sponsors, the public, and regulatory bodies.
Summary: Between Glow and Shadow
Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman concludes his vision by emphasizing that waste is not inevitable, but rather a managerial choice. The course can be corrected by shifting the focus from short-term spectacle to long-term sustainability. The true value of clubs is not measured by the number of high-profile signings, but by their ability to create a balanced economic cycle that grows assets and safeguards the rights of future generations. Those who disregard the industry's rules will pay the price twice: once from their budget, and again from their reputation.

The National Center of Meteorology, in its daily report, revealed details of the expected weather conditions coinciding with the Saudi Professional League's top match between Riyadh's two giants, Al-Shabab and Al-Hilal. Kick-off is scheduled for 10:00 PM this Friday at Al-Shabab's stadium (SHG Arena) in Riyadh.
According to the center's report, the match is expected to take place in mild weather conditions, with temperatures forecast to reach around 21 degrees Celsius. The sky will be partly cloudy, creating a chance of light rain that could add a unique dimension to the game. The center also noted the possibility of reduced horizontal visibility due to some dust particles, while surface winds (southwesterly to northwesterly) will be active, ranging from 14 to 28 kilometers per hour, with humidity reaching up to 55%, which may somewhat affect the ball's movement on the pitch.
This match holds special significance as it is a derby between two of the most established teams in Saudi football, with each side striving to assert its dominance and secure the three points. Al-Shabab enters the match in twelfth place in the Roshan League standings with 25 points, aiming to improve its position and move away from the relegation zone, taking advantage of playing at home in its new stadium.

Matches between Al-Hilal and Al-Shabab are always highly anticipated by sports fans both locally and across the Arab world, given the long history of rivalry between the two clubs and the star players on each team, making weather conditions a crucial factor in the coaches' strategies tonight.
This match comes at a time when the Saudi League is witnessing great sporting activity and unprecedented global interest, as the quality of stadiums and infrastructure, such as the (Arena SHG) stadium, plays a prominent role in accommodating weather fluctuations and ensuring that matches proceed at the highest technical standards, which enhances the league’s position as one of the strongest leagues in the region.

Hamad Al-Yami sends a message to Al-Hilal fans before his surgery in Finland
Hamad Al-Yami sent a message to Al-Hilal fans before undergoing surgery in Finland for a patellar tendon injury. Learn more about the injury and the date of the Al-Hilal vs. Al-Shabab match.
Hamad Al-Yami, the right-back for Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal club, sent a message of reassurance to the club's fans before his anticipated trip for delicate surgery following a serious injury he recently sustained. This message reflects the player's desire to connect with his supporters amidst the anxiety that gripped the Al-Hilal fanbase after the nature of his injury was revealed.
Al-Yami appeared in a video circulated on Al-Hilal's official accounts and social media platforms on Friday, appearing in high spirits despite the difficult situation. In his brief but moving message, Al-Yami said, "Thank you for your concern and inquiries. Praise be to God for what He has decreed and ordained, and God willing, I will return stronger." These words underscore the player's determination to overcome this ordeal and return to represent the team in upcoming matches.
Medical examinations conducted by Al-Hilal's medical staff revealed that the player suffered a patellar tendon injury, requiring surgical intervention to ensure a full recovery and prevent recurrence. Consequently, the club's management, in coordination with the medical staff, decided to send the player to Finland next week, a world-renowned destination for orthopedic surgery and sports medicine, to undergo the procedure under the supervision of leading specialist surgeons and with direct oversight from the club's doctor.
Al-Yami's injury is a significant blow to the coach's options, especially considering the player's impressive statistics this season. The 26-year-old has been a key player for the team, making 27 appearances for Al-Hilal across various domestic and continental competitions this season, totaling 1316 minutes of playing time and contributing two assists, highlighting his crucial tactical role on the right flank.
Meanwhile, this news comes as Al-Hilal prepares for a crucial match, facing Al-Shabab away at 10:00 PM this Friday in the 24th round of the Saudi Professional League. This match is of paramount importance in the league race, as Al-Hilal aims to continue accumulating points and move closer to securing the title. However, the absence of key players presents an additional challenge for the coaching staff, who will have to find suitable replacements for Al-Yami in the coming period.
This injury highlights the immense pressure of matches faced by Saudi clubs competing on multiple fronts, which increases the physical strain on players and raises the likelihood of muscle and tendon injuries. The decision to seek treatment in Finland demonstrates the professionalism of Al-Hilal's medical staff and their commitment to providing the best possible healthcare for their players, ensuring their swift return to the pitch in peak physical condition.
