Racism against Omar Al-Hilali halts Elche vs. Espanyol match: Full details
The Elche vs. Espanyol match was halted after Moroccan player Omar El Helali was subjected to racist abuse by Rafa Mir. Learn more about the incident, the referee's report, and the background of the racism crisis in La Liga.
Spanish football stadiums witnessed a new and unfortunate chapter of racism, as the match between Elche and their guest Espanyol, which took place on Sunday as part of the twenty-sixth round of the Spanish League (Second Division), was briefly stopped in the 80th minute. This forced stoppage came after the young Moroccan defender Omar El Helali, a player for Espanyol, complained of being verbally abused with a racist nature by Elche striker, Rafa Mir.
Details of the incident and activation of the protocol
The referee, Ayuso Galic Apicitoya, was forced to intervene immediately and activate the anti-racism protocol adopted by the Spanish Football Federation and La Liga. According to the referee's report, recorded after the match, Rafa Mir directed insulting words at the Moroccan defender, saying, "You came here on a small boat," a clear racist reference to irregular migration boats. Although the referee indicated in his report that the officiating crew did not hear the insult directly, El Hilali's reaction and obvious distress necessitated a three-minute stoppage of play to calm the situation.
Player backgrounds and the context of the tension
This incident adds to the pressure surrounding striker Rafa Mir, currently on loan at Elche from Sevilla. Mir, a former Valencia forward, faces a complicated legal situation off the pitch, as he remains under investigation for the alleged sexual assault of a young woman, a case that has already generated considerable controversy and resulted in a two-match suspension and a fine from his club. Meanwhile, Omar El Helali, 22, born in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat near Barcelona, appeared deeply affected and on the verge of tears after the match resumed, reflecting the profound psychological impact of such abuse.
The ongoing racism crisis in Spain
This incident is not an isolated event, but rather part of a series of racist incidents that have plagued Spanish football in recent years. Despite the tireless efforts of La Liga and the judicial authorities, such incidents continue to occur in stadiums. Brazilian star Vinicius Junior, the Real Madrid forward, is considered the most prominent figure in the fight against this phenomenon, having been subjected to repeated attacks since 2018. La Liga, through its "X" platform, condemned any act of racism without directly mentioning the match, reaffirming its commitment to combating discrimination.
Match result and other results
On the sporting front, the match ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw. Ironically, Rafa Mir himself snatched a dramatic equalizer for Elche from the penalty spot in the 90th minute, after his teammate Marc Aguado had earlier scored, responding to goals from Kike García and Carlos Romero for Espanyol. Meanwhile, in other Spanish competitions, Valencia returned to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Osasuna, courtesy of a goal from Belgian Largie Ramazani. This win lifts "Los Che" further away from the relegation zone, bringing their points tally to 29.

Ronaldo's stance on the Al-Nassr vs. Neom match in the Roshan League
Find out the latest developments regarding Cristiano Ronaldo's injury and his status for participating in the upcoming Al-Nassr vs. Neom match in the Saudi Professional League after the expected medical examination.
A sense of anticipation and anxiety prevails within the Saudi club Al-Nassr and among its vast fan base, as the first team's coaching staff, led by Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus, has yet to finalize the participation of Cristiano Ronaldo in the upcoming match against NEOM. This match is part of the 25th round of the Saudi Professional League, at a crucial point in the season as Al-Nassr seeks to solidify its lead in the standings.
The team captain, 41, is scheduled to undergo a thorough medical examination on Monday to assess the progress of his recent injury. Ronaldo left the field during the previous match against Al-Fayha due to an injury that necessitated his substitution, raising doubts about his fitness for the upcoming game. The medical examination aims to determine the expected duration of his absence and whether the "Madeira Rocket" will be able to participate in Saturday's match or if the medical staff will prefer to rest him.
This match takes on added importance for Al-Nassr, especially after the announcement of the postponement of their continental clash against Al-Wasl of the UAE in the AFC Champions League. This allows the team to focus entirely on the domestic competition at the moment. Coach Jesus is relying heavily on his star striker, Ronaldo, who has had an exceptional season despite his age. He has participated in 26 matches for Al-Nassr across all competitions this season, scoring 22 goals and providing 4 assists, making him a key pillar of the team's attack.
In terms of the league standings, Al-Nassr enters the match sitting atop the Roshan League table with 61 points, aiming to secure all three points to further extend their lead and move closer to clinching the title. Meanwhile, Neom, currently in eighth place with 32 points, seeks a positive result against the league leaders to improve their position in the mid-table, promising a tough and competitive encounter.
It is worth noting that the match will take place next Saturday evening at 10:00 PM, with all eyes on the stadium to witness this encounter that pits the years of experience embodied by Ronaldo and his teammates against the ambition of the Neom team to prove themselves against the giants. The most prominent question currently on the minds of sports fans is: Will the all-time top scorer be able to lead Al-Nassr in this round, or will his injury force him to watch from the stands?

Racism against Omar Al-Hilali halts Elche vs. Espanyol match in the Spanish League
The Elche vs. Espanyol match was marred by a deplorable incident in which Moroccan player Omar El Helali was subjected to racist abuse by Rafa Mir. Learn more about the incident, the activation of La Liga's protocol, and the match result.

Spanish football witnessed another unfortunate incident of racism when the match between Elche and Espanyol, played on Sunday as part of the 26th round of La Liga, was briefly halted. The stoppage came after Espanyol's young Moroccan defender, Omar El Helali, complained of being subjected to racist abuse by Elche's striker, Rafa Mir.
Activating the anti-racism protocol
In the 80th minute, referee Ayuso Galic Abisteya was forced to intervene decisively and activate La Liga's anti-racism protocol. He folded his arms in a clear signal to stop play for disciplinary reasons related to discrimination, following a direct conversation with the visibly affected Espanyol defender.
According to the referee's post-match report, Elche striker Rafa Mir directed an insulting remark at the Moroccan defender, saying, "You came here on a small boat," a derogatory stereotype related to illegal immigration. Although the referee stated in his report that none of the officiating crew heard the insult directly, the protocol was activated in response to the player's complaint and his apparent emotional state; El Hilali (22 years old), born in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat near Barcelona, appeared on the verge of tears.
Rafa Mir's record and the challenges of Spanish football
Rafa Mir, currently on loan at Elche from Sevilla, faces potentially severe sanctions if the allegations are proven. This incident adds to the player's woes, as he is still under investigation in another case involving alleged sexual assault, for which his former club Valencia suspended him for two matches and fined him instead of dismissing him.
This incident once again highlights the ongoing struggle with racism in Spanish football, despite the tireless efforts of La Liga and the judicial authorities. Real Madrid's Brazilian forward, Vinicius Junior, is a prominent figure in this fight, having been subjected to repeated incidents since 2018. La Liga, through its "X" platform, condemned all racist acts without directly mentioning the match, reaffirming its commitment to combating this scourge.
Match result and other competitions
On the technical side, the match resumed after a three-minute stoppage, ending in a thrilling 2-2 draw. Ironically, it was Rafa Mir himself who snatched the dramatic equalizer for Elche from a penalty in the 90th minute, while his teammate Marc Aguado scored the first goal, and for Espanyol, Kike García and Carlos Romero scored.
In a related context in the same stage, Valencia regained its winning rhythm by defeating Osasuna with a clean goal scored by Belgian Largie Ramazani, raising its tally to 29 points and moving slightly away from the danger zones, while Osasuna’s tally remained frozen, after it had achieved a surprise by defeating Real Madrid in the previous round.
