Harry Maguire convicted: 15 months suspended prison sentence in Greece
Greek court hands down 15-month suspended sentence to Manchester United defender Harry Maguire after his retrial in the Mykonos 2020 assault case.
The Greek judiciary issued a new ruling sentencing Manchester United and England star Harry Maguire to 15 months in prison, suspended, after convicting him of charges including physical assault and attempted bribery, at the conclusion of a thorny case dating back to the summer of 2020 on the tourist island of Mykonos.
This ruling came after the player's appeal against a previous sentence was accepted, leading to a full retrial in a court on the neighboring island of Syros. Although the new sentence reduced the previous term of 21 months and 10 days, he was still found guilty of the charges against him: simple assault, resisting arrest, and attempting to bribe public officials.
Details of the ruling and the judicial division
The new verdict was issued by a majority vote (2 to 1), with two judges voting for conviction and the third for acquittal, reflecting the complexity of the case and the conflicting accounts presented. According to reports in the British newspaper the Daily Mail, Maguire's legal team is preparing to appeal the verdict to the Supreme Court of Greece in a final attempt to completely clear the English defender of his criminal record.
Maguire was not present in the courtroom when the verdict was pronounced, as he is currently in England preparing to participate with his team, Manchester United, in an important match against Newcastle United in the English Premier League. His legal defense team represented him.
Defense narrative: "Mysterious injection" and fear of kidnapping
The story dates back to August 2020, when Maguire was on a family holiday on the Greek island of Mykonos with his wife Fern, his sister Daisy, and his brother Joe. According to the account given by the player and his legal team, as reported by the Mirror, the altercation began when two men approached his sister Daisy and injected her with an unknown substance, causing her to lose consciousness intermittently and become severely ill.
In his previous testimony, Maguire stated that he believed he and his family were being kidnapped. He noted that the individuals who attempted to stop him (the police officers) were in plainclothes and did not clearly identify themselves, prompting him to resist and flee for his family's safety. The defense argued that the alleged bribery attempt was simply a linguistic and cultural misunderstanding amidst the chaos.
The repercussions of the case on the player's career
This incident is considered one of the most significant crises Harry Maguire faced off the pitch, casting a long shadow over his career. Immediately following the incident in 2020, he was temporarily excluded from the England squad and faced immense media and public pressure that affected his performance with Manchester United, indirectly contributing to his later being stripped of the Red Devils' captaincy.
Despite the verdict, the suspended sentence means the player will not serve any time behind bars as long as he does not commit further offenses during the specified period—a common practice in Greek law for first-time, non-serious offenses. However, Maguire maintains his complete innocence, believing he was the victim that night, which explains his determination to pursue the legal case to the highest levels of the judiciary.

Franco Mastantuno suspended for two matches: Details of the Spanish Federation's punishment
The Competition Committee has decided to suspend Real Madrid player Franco Mastantuno for two matches for misconduct against Getafe. Learn the details of the punishment and why Chuamini's appeal was rejected.
The Spanish Football Federation's Competition Committee has issued a strict disciplinary decision against rising Argentine star Franco Mastantuño, the Real Madrid midfielder, suspending him for two official matches. This decision comes in the wake of events during Real Madrid's recent La Liga match against Getafe, where the player received a straight red card for conduct deemed unsportsmanlike by the committee.
The committee based its decision on the referee's report, which accurately recorded the words the player directed at him at the moment the card was shown. According to the report, Mastantuno addressed the referee with insulting remarks, saying, "Shame on you, damned shame on you." The legal committee classified this behavior under Article 124 of the Spanish Football Federation's disciplinary code, which deals with punishing players who show disrespect or use abusive language towards match officials. The code clearly stipulates a suspension of between two and three matches in such cases.
In a related matter, the committee did not stop at punishing Mastantuno, but also issued a decision concerning his teammate, French midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni. The committee rejected Real Madrid's appeal to overturn the yellow card Tchouaméni received in the same match. In its reasoning, the committee explained that strong physical contact between players falls within the referee's discretionary authority, and that there was no clear foul warranting intervention to overturn the referee's decision, thus confirming the card in the player's disciplinary record.
This decision comes as a significant blow to Real Madrid's coaching staff's plans for the next two league matches. The penalty is particularly important given the intense competition in the league, where the absence of any key player or strategic substitute significantly impacts the coach's ability to rotate players and maintain team rhythm. Spanish clubs typically approach decisions from the Competition Committee with extreme caution, especially those concerning refereeing, as the Spanish Football Federation consistently strives to enforce strict discipline on the pitch to ensure the competition is conducted in a spirit of sportsmanship.
The coaching staff is expected to find alternative solutions to compensate for the absence of the Argentine talent in the next two matches, while the team must focus on overcoming these administrative and technical obstacles to continue competing for the league title. This incident highlights the importance of mental discipline for young players in physically demanding and high-pressure matches such as the Madrid derbies and encounters with tough teams like Getafe.

Jeddah derby: The clash between Yajsle and Conceição will determine the fate of the league
Fans are eagerly anticipating the Jeddah derby between Al-Ahli and Al-Ittihad in round 25. A fiery encounter that brings together Yassla's tactics and Conceição's challenge amidst a fierce battle for the top spot in the Saudi League.
Saudi and Arab football fans will turn their attention to Jeddah, specifically the "Al-Inma" stadium, next Friday evening, to follow one of the strongest classic encounters in the region, as Al-Ahli Club hosts its traditional rival, Al-Ittihad Club, in the anticipated "Jeddah Derby," as part of the twenty-fifth round of the Saudi Professional League.
Complex calculations and a struggle for the top
This match is fraught with complex calculations for both sides, lending it a fierce competitive edge that transcends the mere three points at stake. Al-Ahli enters the game as a direct title contender, currently sitting second in the standings with 59 points, just two points behind league leaders Al-Nassr. This close proximity makes a victory absolutely essential for Al-Ahli to maintain pressure on the leaders and capitalize on any slip-up to seize the top spot.
On the other hand, Al-Ittihad is striving to get back on track and return to the top tier, currently sitting in fifth place with 42 points. The club hopes to capitalize on the derby to close the gap with the leading teams, rediscover the winning form that satisfies its large fan base, and boost its chances of securing a spot in continental competitions next season.
Clash of Minds: The German School vs. the Portuguese Challenge
What distinguishes this round's derby is the fierce tactical battle on the sidelines between two distinct footballing schools: the German school, represented by Matthias Jäissle, and the Portuguese school, led by Sérgio Conceição. Jäissle has been at the helm of Al Ahly since July 2023, and he has succeeded in imposing his style and building a strong team identity, as reflected in the numbers and statistics.
Historically, Jääsle boasts an impressive record against Al-Ittihad, having faced them five times previously, securing three wins, one draw, and suffering only one defeat. These statistics provide the German coach with a significant morale boost ahead of kickoff.
Conceição and the mission of revenge and redemption
In contrast, Portuguese coach Sergio Conceição has been managing Al-Ittihad since October 2025, with a long-term contract extending until June 2028, reflecting the club's confidence in his project. However, Conceição faces a particular challenge in this match, as he seeks to avenge his team's loss to Al-Ahli in their only direct encounter during the first round of the current season, a match that ended in a victory for Al-Ahli and secured them three points.
This match represents a true test of Conceição's tactical abilities in handling big games, especially as Al-Ittihad fans expect a lot from him to restore the team's prestige in the derby. A victory in such a match not only impacts the league standings but also boosts the morale of the players and fans, confirming the team's ability to compete in upcoming competitions.
In conclusion, the Jeddah derby is a sporting event that goes beyond the boundaries of the stadium, as it reflects the great development that Saudi football is witnessing, and attracts the attention of local and international media, which puts pressure on both coaches to provide a rich football feast befitting the reputation and long history of the two teams.
