A funny incident occurred involving Congolese player Thievy Bifouma, formerly of Las Palmas and Espanyol, after he mistakenly transferred to the Iranian team Esteghlal Khuzestan.

The 32-year-old player had decided to move to the Iranian league through Esteghlal Tehran in order to fulfill his dream of facing Cristiano Ronaldo, the captain of Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr, in the AFC Champions League, as the Saudi and Iranian teams are in the West Zone group.

In an interview with the Iranian television channel Zandeh, Bifouma explained that his lifelong dream is to play against Ronaldo, stressing that he moved to Iran to achieve it.

But Bifouma later discovered that his transfer was not to Esteghlal Tehran, who would face Al-Nasr in the AFC Champions League, but to another team that also bears the name Esteghlal, namely Esteghlal Khuzestan.

He added: “Since Ronaldo is now in Asia, and there was an opportunity for me to come to Iran, they talked to me about the offer from Esteghlal (Esteghlal Khuzestan), and I looked at the schedule of matches and realized that they had a match against Al-Nasr, and I said to myself, this is where I want to go.”.

He continued, laughing: “I had no idea that there were two teams named Esteghlal in Iran.”.

Bifouma explained how he discovered the matter, saying: “When I arrived in Tehran, my fellow citizen, Gael Kakuta, contacted me and asked me where I was, and I told him that I was going to undergo medical examinations.”.

He continued: “An hour later he called me again and mocked me, saying: You play for the small Esteghlal team, while we are part of a bigger team. You defend and we attack.”.

Bifouma concluded by saying, "Despite that, it didn't matter because in the end we won the match against them in the Iranian league, where I scored the winning goal 1-0.".

Bifouma's situation is similar to Robinho's when he moved to Manchester City thinking it was Manchester United, before realizing he had joined the team by mistake.

During the fiery encounter between his team, Al-Qadisiyah, and Al-Hilal in the ninth round of matches, Casteels stood as an impenetrable wall, preventing the "Leaders" from taking the lead at a crucial moment in the game.

The most dramatic moment came when the referee awarded Al-Hilal a penalty, and international star Salem Al-Dawsari, known for his prowess in such situations, stepped up to take it. Moments of anticipation filled the stands, but Castilles had other ideas. With sharp focus and a perfect reading of the game, the Belgian goalkeeper dived in the right direction and brilliantly saved Al-Dawsari's shot, preserving the draw and securing a valuable point for his team against one of the strongest title contenders.

A career filled with European experience

This brilliance was no accident; Koen Casteels boasts a rich and varied resume at the highest level. Before joining Al-Qadisiyah in the summer of 2024, the veteran goalkeeper spent many years in the German Bundesliga as the first-choice goalkeeper and captain of VfL Wolfsburg. During his time in Germany, he earned a reputation as one of the most consistent goalkeepers, securing his place as a regular in the Belgian national team, one of the strongest in the world.

An outstanding record in penalty shootouts

His penalty save against Salem Al-Dawsari underscores Castilles' impressive record in handling such shots. Throughout his professional career, the Belgian goalkeeper has faced 66 penalties, saving 15 while conceding 51. These figures show a save percentage exceeding 22%, a respectable rate that places him among the goalkeepers specializing in stopping penalties, giving his team added confidence in crucial moments.

Impact that extends beyond the stadium

Castilles' performance is a testament to the positive impact international signings have had on the competitiveness of the Saudi Professional League. For Al-Qadisiyah, newly promoted to the Saudi Professional League, securing a point against Al-Hilal is a significant morale booster. This performance confirms that the club's investment in bringing in players of Koen Castilles' caliber was a wise decision, as the Belgian goalkeeper represents a crucial asset the team can rely on to build its ambitions of staying in the top flight and competing strongly in a league that has captured the world's attention.

The penalty kick awarded to Al-Hilal in their match against Al-Qadisiyah in the nineteenth round of the Saudi Professional League sparked widespread controversy among followers, before the Jordanian refereeing expert Ahmed Abu Khadija settled the matter, confirming the correctness of the match referee’s decision.

In an exclusive statement to Al-Midan Al-Riyadi, Abu Khadija explained that the referee's decision to award a penalty to Salem Al-Dawsari was legally sound. He said, "The penalty awarded to Al-Hilal was correct. There was a clear foul by Al-Qadisiyah defender Jihad Zikri on Salem Al-Dawsari's thigh, and therefore the referee's decision to award the penalty was correct." Despite the correctness of the decision, Al-Hilal star Salem Al-Dawsari was unable to convert the penalty into a goal, as Al-Qadisiyah's Belgian goalkeeper, Koen Casteels, made a brilliant save, maintaining the 1-1 draw at that point in the match, which was held at Prince Mohammed bin Fahd Stadium.

General context and importance of the match

This match comes at a crucial stage of the Saudi Professional League, which is witnessing fierce competition for the top spot and leading positions. Al-Hilal, with its rich history as one of the most prominent clubs in Saudi and Asian football, is always expected to win every match to maintain its position at the top of the standings and strive for the title. Any slip-up, especially against mid-table teams, could prove costly at the end of the season. On the other hand, teams like Al-Qadisiyah are striving to deliver strong performances against the top teams and establish themselves in the Professional League, making these encounters particularly competitive and intense.

The impact of refereeing decisions in the Roshan League

Refereeing decisions, especially those related to penalty kicks, take on added importance given the close point standings of the competing teams. With the implementation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the Saudi League, every incident is subject to intensive scrutiny, reducing impactful errors but not eliminating refereeing controversies entirely. The confirmation of a refereeing expert's opinion on such a decision helps calm public opinion and lends credibility to the referees' decisions, which is vital for the reputation of a league that has attracted global attention with its constellation of international stars. The accuracy of refereeing not only affects the outcome of a single match but also the course of an entire championship and the spirit of sportsmanship among clubs and their fans.

Salem Al-Dawsari misses a penalty kick for Al-Hilal

Once again, Salem Al-Dawsari, captain of Al-Hilal and one of the most prominent icons of Saudi football, finds himself facing the "penalty kick curse" that has plagued him throughout his career. In a moment that held fans' breath during his team's match against Al-Qadisiyah in the nineteenth round of the Saudi Professional League, Al-Dawsari missed a penalty kick that could have extended his team's lead at a crucial moment in the game, sparking widespread debate about his record with penalty kicks.

Context of the event and its details

The missed penalty added another statistic to Al-Dawsari's record, a fact that worries his fans. According to reliable statistics, this was the 11th penalty kick that "The Tornado" has failed to convert in his professional career. These missed penalties are distributed as follows: 6 with the Saudi national team in international competitions, and 5 with his club, Al-Hilal, in various tournaments. In contrast, the player has a relatively good record of successfully converting 20 penalties, including 17 goals for Al-Hilal and 3 for the Saudi national team. This stark contrast raises questions about his focus and composure in these crucial moments.

Significance and impact: Beyond a wasted kick

Missing a penalty kick cannot be considered a trivial matter, especially when it involves a player of Salem Al-Dawsari's stature. Domestically, such misses affect team morale and can cost them valuable points in the fiercely contested Roshan League title race. They also place additional pressure on the player himself as the team's captain and primary penalty taker, potentially prompting the coaching staff to reassess his role. Regionally and internationally, Al-Dawsari, the reigning Asian Player of the Year and scorer of the historic goal against Argentina in the 2012 World Cup, is seen as a role model for Saudi players. Consequently, any weakness in a fundamental technical aspect like penalty kicks becomes a subject of analysis and discussion in Asian and global sporting circles.

Historical background: A great player and an ongoing challenge

Despite this challenge, Salem Al-Dawsari's remarkable career cannot be overlooked. He is a decisive player who has directly contributed to Al-Hilal's numerous titles, most notably the AFC Champions League, and has led the Saudi national team to historic achievements. Al-Dawsari is distinguished by his exceptional individual skills and his ability to make a difference in the most difficult circumstances. However, penalty kicks remain a unique psychological and technical challenge for him, a phenomenon common even among the world's football legends who have faced similar pressures. The question remains whether he will continue to shoulder this responsibility, or whether the team will look to another avenue to ensure these precious opportunities are converted into goals.
