The leader... majesty and prestige
The Italian coach of Al-Hilal's first football team, Simone Inzaghi, did not miss an opportunity to praise his players
The Italian coach of Al-Hilal's first football team, Simone Inzaghi, did not miss an opportunity to praise his players after every match in the FIFA Club World Cup, especially after the epic 4-3 victory over Manchester City in the round of 16, where they delivered a heroic performance.
Inzaghi's squad, which has remained unchanged since his arrival less than a month ago, is relatively new to the leader who has spent hundreds of millions over the past two years, but in a calculated way, although the bitterness of the Brazilian Neymar deal is still present in the memory.
In 2023, ownership of four major clubs was transferred to the Saudi Public Investment Fund: Al-Ittihad, Al-Hilal, Al-Ahli, and Al-Nasr, ushering in a new phase of unprecedented financial support.
The total value of the four clubs' deals exceeded the one billion dollar mark within two years, and Neymar's transfer to Al-Hilal was one of the most prominent and expensive of these deals.
But the deal, which was placed on par with the transfer of Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo to Al-Nasr and Frenchman Karim Benzema to Al-Ittihad, ended in utter failure after Neymar participated in only seven matches with Al-Hilal due to injury.
Neymar, the all-time top scorer for the Brazilian national team, joined Al-Hilal in August 2023 from Paris Saint-Germain, in a two-season deal estimated at around 100 million euros with an annual salary of the same amount.
The Brazilian left Al-Hilal by mutual consent to return to his parent club Santos, where he is also suffering from injuries despite the club extending his contract until the end of the year.
However, the failure of the Neymar deal did not ruin Al-Hilal’s first season, as the team won the league and cup titles in 2023-2024, before coming away empty-handed from the following season.
In Neymar’s first season, Al-Hilal signed Portuguese Ruben Neves, Serbians Aleksandar Mitrovic and Savic, in addition to the Brazilian trio Renan Lodi, Malcom and Matheus Pereira, only Senegalese defender Kalidou Koulibaly, and Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.
The club strengthened its ranks the following season, relying on contracts with young players, bringing in Brazilians Marcos Leonardo and Caio Cesar, and also adding Portuguese Joao Cancelo.
Continuous development
Following the epic 4-3 extra-time victory over Manchester City, the main topic of conversation was the high level of physical fitness displayed by Al-Hilal players, after they withstood 120 minutes against one of the strongest European teams.
The players’ ages played a crucial role in their movements on the field, as evidenced by Caio Cesar’s performance after coming on as a substitute, and Marcos Leonardo’s start, along with the experienced midfield duo of Neves and Savic.
In press conferences, coach Inzaghi did not hide his admiration for Al-Hilal's management and organization within the club. After the 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in the first round of the group stage, he said: "I have found a wonderful club that meets all my organizational and technical requirements. The organization is excellent, and Arab football is constantly developing.".
The former Inter Milan coach expressed his satisfaction with his players after each match, both local and foreign.
After the draw with Austrian side Salzburg, he said: "All I can say is, 'Thank you for this good performance.'" Following the victory over Manchester City, he stated: "We've been working for weeks, they are committed, and as their coach, I'm satisfied with their performance." He added: "They deserve this win. They fought for every ball until the very last minute. It's a joy for Al-Hilal, Saudi Arabia, and the fans.".
Market monitoring
After the Club World Cup, attention will turn to the upcoming summer transfer market, as Al-Hilal has been linked with a number of stars. The CEO of the Spanish club, Esteve Calzada, previously stated in an interview with BBC Sport: “We will enter the traditional transfer market after the competition, and we have high ambitions to see if we can further strengthen the team, while recognizing that the current squad is very strong and competitive.”.

Guardiola challenges Real Madrid and prepares City for the title race
Pep Guardiola confirms Manchester City's readiness to face Real Madrid in the Champions League, and reveals the team's plans for the English Premier League race and how to deal with the players during Ramadan.

Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, asserted that his team has learned invaluable tactical and mental lessons from their ongoing rivalry with Real Madrid in the Champions League. These remarks came after the draw for the round of 16, which pitted the two giants against each other once again in what has become known as the "modern-day European Clasico.".
Clash of the Titans: A Renewed History in the Champions League
All eyes of football fans will be on the two-legged tie between the 10-time English champions and the record 15-time European champions in March. This encounter carries particular significance given the recent history between the two sides, who have met 15 times previously in the prestigious continental competition. Their most recent meeting was in the group stage last December, where City secured a valuable 2-1 victory in the heart of the Spanish capital, Madrid.
Despite this victory, the sting of elimination remains, as Real Madrid managed to knock City out of the competition in the last two seasons; first through the play-off round with a resounding 6-3 aggregate win, and before that through a dramatic penalty shootout in the 2023-2024 quarter-finals. Guardiola believes that playing against the most decorated club in history forges a champion's character in his players, saying: "When you face the best teams in the history of this competition, you learn and improve to become a better version of yourself in the future.".
The English Premier League race: The relentless chase
Away from European competition, Guardiola's full focus is on maintaining his domestic dominance, aiming for a seventh Premier League title in his illustrious era. The team prepares to face Leeds United on Saturday, with the goal of closing the gap on league leaders Arsenal. Despite trailing by five points, City's title hopes remain in their own hands, given they have a game in hand and a highly anticipated clash with the Gunners in April.
The numerical calculations indicate that if Manchester City wins its remaining 11 matches, it will secure the title regardless of Arsenal's results, putting enormous pressure on Guardiola's former protégé, Mikel Arteta, who is still searching for his first league title after only managing the 2020 FA Cup and finishing as runner-up in three consecutive seasons.
Professional handling of the month of Ramadan
In the context of physical and mental preparations, Guardiola addressed the readiness of his Muslim players during the holy month of Ramadan. The Spanish coach confirmed that stars Abdulkadir Khusanov of Uzbekistan, Rayan Aït-Nouri of Algeria, Rayan Cherki of France, and the talented Egyptian Omar Marmoush will be available to participate effectively.
Guardiola explained that the club has a top-level medical and nutrition staff to ensure that the players adapt to fasting without affecting their physical performance, adding: "These players are not young, they are used to playing during this period, and we know very well how to manage things professionally to ensure their safety and that they perform at their best.".

Yassla comments on Al-Ahly's lead and unbeaten streak in the Roshan League
Matthias Jiesle celebrates Al-Ahli's temporary lead in the Roshan League and the team's 16-match unbeaten run, praising the tremendous transformation in Al-Raed's performance and their competition with Al-Nasr and Al-Hilal.

The German coach of Al-Ahli Saudi team, Matthias Jäissle, expressed his great pride and appreciation for the rising level that his team is presenting in the Roshan Professional League competitions, after the success of “Al-Raqui” in maintaining its record without defeats for the sixteenth consecutive match, in an achievement that reflects the great technical work within the corridors of the club.
The young German coach made his remarks via his official Instagram account on Friday, celebrating the players' fighting spirit by saying, "16 consecutive matches without defeat, what a tremendous transformation from everyone at this club to keep going." These words underscore the high morale within the Jeddah team's dressing room and the coaching staff's desire to maintain pressure on their direct rivals in the title race.
Al-Ahli secured a valuable and tactically astute 1-0 victory over Al-Riyadh in their match on Thursday evening, part of the 24th round of the Roshan League. This win was more than just three points; it served as a clear declaration of Al-Ahli's intentions to fiercely compete for the title until the very end.
Temporary lead and pressure on rivals
Thanks to this important victory, Al-Ahli temporarily jumped to the top of the Roshan Professional League standings, raising their points tally to 59. With this total, Al-Ahli is one point ahead of their closest rival, Al-Nasr (second place), and four points ahead of Al-Hilal in third place, putting additional pressure on their competitors in their remaining matches this round.
The significance of the number 16 and the enormous transformation
Jäsle's talk of a "tremendous transformation" carries profound implications for the team's journey. Reaching 16 consecutive matches unbeaten in a highly competitive league like the Saudi League, with its world-class clubs, is a strong indicator of the team's technical and mental stability. This record reflects the solidity of the defensive system and the effectiveness of the attacking solutions implemented by the German coach since taking over.
This achievement takes on added significance given the overall context of this season's competition, which has seen Saudi football experience a qualitative leap and unprecedented global attention. Therefore, Al-Ahli's presence at the top of the standings and its ability to compete with clubs of the caliber of Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr confirms the return of the "Castle of Cups" to its rightful place as one of the pillars of Saudi football and a perennial contender for domestic and continental titles.

Paris Saint-Germain's absences against Le Havre and Enrique's statements
Paris Saint-Germain will be without Dembélé, Neves, and Reus against Le Havre in Ligue 1. Luis Enrique criticizes the fixture congestion and explains the details of the injuries within the Parisian squad.
Paris Saint-Germain faces a tough challenge in their upcoming match against Le Havre in the 24th round of the French Ligue 1. The capital club has officially announced a significant number of absences, including key players from coach Luis Enrique's squad. These absences come at a crucial point in the season, presenting the coaching staff with a real test of maintaining the team's balance and continuing their pursuit of titles.
Details of injuries and significant absences
According to the club's medical statement released on Saturday, the team will be without French winger Ousmane Dembélé, Portuguese defender João Neves, Spaniard Fabián Ruiz, and youngster Seny Maillol. The statement explained that Dembélé and Maillol are continuing their individual training programs as part of their rehabilitation program. Dembélé sustained a leg injury during the first leg of the Champions League playoff against Monaco approximately ten days ago, a match that clearly took a physical toll on the team.
Regarding midfield, the club confirmed that Spaniard Fabian Ruiz will undergo a two-week individualized training program, based on the latest medical assessment, to alleviate his knee pain. Ruiz has been sidelined since the 2-1 defeat to Sporting Lisbon at the end of January. Portuguese player João Neves has also joined the injury list after suffering a left ankle injury, requiring further medical attention in the coming days.
Enrique criticizes the busy schedule
At a press conference held at the club's training center in Yvelines, coach Luis Enrique made no secret of his dissatisfaction with the current situation, stating that the absence of a player of Fabian Ruiz's caliber represents a "real problem" and a significant blow to the team's plans, despite his optimism about Ruiz's imminent return. Enrique also took the opportunity to highlight the issue of physical exhaustion plaguing players in modern football.
Enrique said frankly: "As a coach, you always want all the players to be ready, but that was impossible this season. Last year was very intense, and we are paying the price for that now. The players only had three weeks of vacation, and after all, they are human beings, not machines.".
Context of the event and its impact on the French league
This match is particularly important as it comes at a crucial stage of the season, when top teams begin to struggle with a congested fixture schedule between domestic and continental competitions. Historically, league matches following major European fixtures have often been a trap for big clubs like Paris Saint-Germain, with opponents like Le Havre exploiting fatigue and absences to try and snatch valuable points.
Enrique's comments reflect a growing global debate about the FIFA calendar and the fixture congestion that leads to increased injury rates among top players. Domestically, this situation puts Paris Saint-Germain under pressure to rotate players to avoid further depletion of their squad while maintaining their lead in Ligue 1 and their status as champions. The upcoming match against Le Havre will therefore be a test of the depth of the bench and the coach's ability to find alternative tactical solutions.
