French President Emmanuel Macron renewed his call on Thursday for an immediate ceasefire, stressing the need to implement Resolution 1701 and to establish the foundations for lasting peace along the Blue Line.

During the opening of the international conference to support Lebanon, which the United States did not attend, Macron stressed the need to stop Hezbollah's attacks on Israel, and for Israel to stop its raids on various Lebanese regions.

The French president expressed his country's readiness to coordinate the entry of aid to the Lebanese, warning of a worsening displacement crisis.

Macron said that 1.1 million people have been displaced, which will lead to profound unrest, noting that Lebanon is important to itself and to the whole world as well, so its diversity must not be compromised.

For his part, caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati expressed the Lebanese authorities’ commitment to implementing UN Resolution 1701, stressing that the resolution is the cornerstone of security and stability in the south.

Mikati said: “The Lebanese army, which the UN resolution stipulates should be deployed in the south, unlike other armed parties, has begun recruiting, but it needs financial support and international training. He pledged to deploy an additional 8,000 soldiers in the south as part of the ceasefire.”.

The caretaker prime minister called for an immediate ceasefire, noting that the government still supports the US and French initiative for a 21-day ceasefire.

Mikati stressed the importance of sending urgent aid to the displaced and a rapid reconstruction of the damaged infrastructure, noting that the large wave of displacement has caused a humanitarian crisis, and urged the international community to impose a truce in the country.

Other world powers are also participating in the conference to provide urgent humanitarian aid to Lebanon, support its security forces, and push for a ceasefire. The initiative, spearheaded by French President Emmanuel Macron, aims to emphasize the need to halt hostilities based on UN Security Council Resolution 1701 of 2006, which calls for southern Lebanon to be free of any forces or weapons other than those belonging to the Lebanese state. The conference also seeks to mobilize the international community to provide assistance to between 500,000 and one million displaced people. The Lebanese government says it needs $250 million a month to deal with the crisis.
