Will Trump succeed in amending the US Constitution?

Amid expectations from American journalists and experts that US President Donald Trump and his allies will move to amend the text of the Constitution

Amid expectations from American journalists and experts that US President Donald Trump and his allies will move to amend the text of the US Constitution regarding the presidential term, American media revealed an initiative presented by Republican Representative Andy Ogles to amend the Constitution, which aims to allow President Donald Trump or any other president in the future to assume a third term, provided that his terms are not consecutive, according to the Axios website.

Ogles, a Tennessee state representative, explained in a statement that the proposed amendment emphasizes that “no person may be elected to the office of president more than three times, and may not be elected for any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms,” even though the current 22nd Amendment to the Constitution states that no person may be elected to the office of president more than twice.

The Republican congressman said: “The amendment will allow President Trump to serve a third term, ensuring the bold leadership our nation needs is maintained,” adding: “Trump has proven to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decline and restoring its greatness, and he should be given the time necessary to achieve this goal.”.

Newsweek magazine reported that the amendment would prevent a president from running for a third term if he had been elected for two consecutive terms, thus preventing any of former presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, or others from running for a third term if the amendment were to take place.

Two months ago, Democratic Representative Dan Goldman of New York submitted a draft amendment to the House of Representatives asserting that it should apply to all presidents, including 78-year-old Trump, explaining that the goal is to emphasize the principle of rotation.

However, Trump told Time magazine earlier that he would never support changing the amendment, but journalists close to him confirmed at the end of last year that Trump and his allies would soon turn their attention to the 22nd Amendment.

The tradition of a two-term presidency in the United States began with George Washington, America's first president, who voluntarily chose not to run for a third term after his second term ended in 1797. He set a powerful example of commitment to democracy and the avoidance of tyranny, thus establishing the principle that presidential terms should be limited and rotated. This tradition was reinforced by America's third president, Thomas Jefferson, who praised the two-term limit as a safeguard against the concentration of power in one person for an extended period. This tradition has persisted for over 140 years, although President Franklin Delano Roosevelt broke with it during an exceptional period in American history—the Great Depression and World War II—and was re-elected four times (1933–1945). He died 83 days into his fourth term in 1945, sparking widespread debate about presidential term limits and prompting Congress to pass the Twenty-Second Amendment in 1947, which became law after ratification in 1951. Thus, the tradition initiated by Washington became... Constitutional law, affirming the United States' commitment to the principle of the rotation of power and its separation from any person, regardless of the circumstances.

Saudi Arabia offers condolences to Congo for the victims of the Rubaya mine collapse

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia expressed its sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the Democratic Republic of Congo, its leadership, government and people, for the tragic incident of the collapse of a mining mine in the city of Rubaya, located in the east of the country, which resulted in hundreds of victims and injuries in a humanitarian disaster that shook local and international circles.

In its official statement, the Kingdom affirmed its full support and solidarity with the Democratic Republic of Congo in this painful tragedy, expressing its hope that this ordeal will be overcome, and wishing safety and security for the friendly Congolese people, and mercy for the victims, whose number exceeded 226 workers, in a heavy toll that reflects the magnitude of the disaster that befell the region.

Details of the disaster and the mining context in Congo

This incident once again highlights the numerous risks facing the mining sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly in the mineral-rich eastern regions. Rubaya is a vital center for the extraction of strategic minerals such as coltan and manganese, but mining operations are often carried out using traditional (artisanal) methods that lack even the most basic occupational safety standards, leaving workers vulnerable to frequent landslides, especially during the rainy season when the soil becomes increasingly fragile.

Human and economic dimensions

Mine accidents in the Democratic Republic of Congo are a chronic challenge for the country, where a large part of the local economy and population depends on artisanal mining as a primary source of livelihood, despite the high risks. Observers point to the high number of casualties in the Rubaya accident as being due to severe overcrowding at the excavation sites and the poor infrastructure of the tunnels, which turned the site into a death trap immediately after the collapse.

The Kingdom's diplomatic and humanitarian role

The statement of condolence and solidarity issued by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia reflects its unwavering commitment to the principles of human fraternity and proactive diplomacy during times of crisis. The Kingdom consistently strives to extend bridges of communication and support to sisterly and friendly nations facing natural disasters and humanitarian crises, thereby reaffirming its leading role in strengthening international solidarity and bolstering the psychological and moral well-being of affected populations.
