The list of “rogue states” includes countries that the United States is prohibited from cooperating with or providing support to in the field of civilian nuclear energy.
The White House said in a post on the “X” platform that although this designation is not official by the US government, Syria has remained listed as a state sponsor of terrorism since 1979 according to the US State Department.
This designation maintains a set of strict restrictions, including a ban on foreign aid, restrictions on arms exports and sales, controls on dual-use materials, as well as other financial and procedural sanctions, according to Russia Today.
The “Rogue States” list is not an official legal classification in the United States, but rather a political concept used by US administrations, especially in the 1990s and early 2000s, to refer to countries accused of supporting “international terrorism,” seeking to acquire or proliferate weapons of mass destruction (nuclear, chemical, biological), systematically violating human rights, challenging the international order, or threatening regional and international security.
The term became particularly prominent during the administration of former US President Bill Clinton, and was then adopted and developed under George W. Bush.
