This meeting, hosted by Turkey for the first time, was attended by foreign ministers from prominent Arab and Islamic countries, in an attempt to coordinate international efforts to end the escalation in Gaza and support the two-state solution.
The meeting was chaired by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, and attended by Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif Al Zayani, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aty, Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugyono, Palestinian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed Mustafa, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, and representatives of the United Arab Emirates and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
The meeting addressed the latest developments in the occupied Palestinian territories, with a focus on the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza following the resumption of Israeli military operations after the collapse of the truce on March 18. Participants stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire, rejected any attempts to displace Palestinians, and emphasized the importance of delivering humanitarian aid without restrictions.
The participants expressed their “deep concern” about the escalation of violence, and condemned the targeting of civilians and infrastructure in Gaza, considering it a flagrant violation of international law and ceasefire agreements. The meeting reaffirmed its categorical rejection of any plans or policies aimed at displacing Palestinians from Gaza or the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
The meeting witnessed extensive discussion on ways to create internal pressure to stop the Israeli war on civilians in Gaza, and to prevent the scenario of displacement that is rejected by Arabs and the international community. It also addressed the next steps on the political and diplomatic level in order to embody the two-state solution and enhance support for it in the international community, especially with regard to the conference that is expected to be held in New York next June under the auspices of Saudi Arabia and France, in order to advance the two-state solution, according to an official statement of the League of Arab States.
The Arab-Islamic Ministerial Contact Group called for intensified efforts to ensure the sustainability of the ceasefire agreement signed on January 19, and for the immediate implementation of its second phase, which includes the release of detainees and facilitating reconstruction, in accordance with the Arab plan adopted by the emergency Arab summit hosted by Cairo on March 4, and the ministerial meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, as an Arab-Islamic plan for recovery and reconstruction in Gaza
