The EU's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, revealed that the international coalition for a two-state solution will hold its first meeting in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, mid-week. Speaking at the ninth regional forum in Barcelona on Monday, he said the coalition was launched to serve as a platform for all countries to participate in ending the Gaza war and lifting the blockade, working to free hostages, and striving for a two-state solution, stressing the need to translate words into action.
Borrell noted that after the Riyadh meeting, the coalition committees will hold a meeting in Brussels, Cairo, Amman, Istanbul and the Norwegian capital Oslo to discuss the situation in Gaza in order to implement the two-state solution.
The foreign policy official stressed that the international coalition is an "umbrella" for the practical contribution of international partners to the implementation of the two-state solution, calling for more international pressure to stop Israel's ongoing attacks on the Gaza Strip, its contribution to the expansion of the war in the Middle East region, and its extension to Lebanon.
During the ninth regional forum of the Union for the Mediterranean in Barcelona, the foreign ministers of the Union for the Mediterranean countries will meet, in the presence of the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, to discuss the most pressing regional challenges, especially the worrying situation in the Middle East.
Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan announced the launch of the “International Coalition for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution” during the ministerial meeting on the Palestinian issue on the sidelines of the high-level week of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York last month.
He emphasized that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state is an inherent right and a cornerstone of the peace process. He expressed his country's appreciation for the nations that have recently recognized Palestine, urging all countries to have the courage to take the same decision and join the international consensus of 149 states that have recognized Palestine. Prince Faisal affirmed that implementing the two-state solution is the optimal way to break the cycle of conflict and suffering, and to establish a new reality in which the region, including Israel, enjoys security and coexistence.
