Iranian official: Drones or infiltration behind port explosion
As the death toll from the explosion at Rajaee Port in Iran rose to at least 65, amid ongoing investigations into its causes, reports emerged
As the death toll from the explosion at Rajaee Port in Iran rose to at least 65, amid ongoing investigations to determine its causes, Iranian officials spoke of hypotheses related to a possible act of sabotage.
Mohammad Mehdi Shahriari, a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee in the Iranian parliament, revealed that the explosion may have been caused by the use of small drones or by infiltrators.
The Persian-language website Rouydad24 quoted Shahriari as saying: “One of the main scenarios being discussed by investigators is that an act of sabotage occurred, noting that the National Security Committee must take this hypothesis seriously.”.
He stated that the information available so far is incomplete, noting that a final judgment cannot be made before the investigations are completed, but the authorities should not rule out all possibilities, whether they resulted from technical negligence or a deliberate act, as he put it.
He acknowledged a general lack of adherence to safety standards within Iran, comparing the incident to the Plasco building fire in Tehran. He said, "Unfortunately, we don't observe safety procedures anywhere, and that's why we're seeing this number of fires, which is unparalleled in other countries.".
The MP stressed that if it is proven that what happened was an act of sabotage, it is necessary to inform the people of this, especially since flammable materials are not limited to Bandar Abbas only, but are present in multiple locations within the country, which requires strengthening security awareness.

The official did not rule out that the incident was related to the negotiations between Iran and the United States, and that someone wanted to sabotage these talks by carrying out this attack.
He did not rule out an Israeli role, and he believed that the hypothesis that the Israelis were behind this incident was being put forward because they do not hesitate to do anything to disrupt the negotiations, and they are accustomed to carrying out acts of this kind, as he put it.
Iranian parliamentarian Mohammad Siraj accused Israel of being behind the explosion at Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas, stressing that the event was not accidental.
On Monday, the Rukna website quoted Siraj as saying: “This event was by no means accidental, and there are clear indications of Israeli involvement in it.” He added: “The explosions occurred in four different locations, and this indicates that the explosive materials had been planted in advance inside the containers.”.
Meanwhile, several members of parliament requested a closed session to discuss the new round of negotiations and the full implications of the incident, which they described as tragic. Initial investigations revealed the presence of hazardous materials in containers at the port.
