The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture revealed an update to the standards and specifications for non-bottled drinking water in the Kingdom, in accordance with the Water Law and its executive regulations, which stipulated that the water must be free of substances that may affect public health or the environment in general.

The ministry stressed the importance of monitoring water quality in production, transportation, distribution, and storage systems to ensure compliance with approved standards and specifications, and the necessity for every person to have access to clean and safe water to meet their natural needs.

The standards revealed by the ministry were explained, including physical and chemical specifications, inorganic trace elements and heavy metals, as well as standards for organic chemical compounds, organic and hydrocarbon properties, standards for chemicals resulting from water treatment and purification processes, active radioactive standards, along with the properties of radionuclides (isotopes), and microbial standards.

The Environment Authority stipulated that all providers of unbottled drinking water services, in the public and private sectors, whether produced from desalination plants, purification plants, distributed through water networks, or from drinking water sources, must adhere to these specifications and standards to ensure the provision of pure water free from any pollutants.

The ministry confirmed that the update of standards and specifications for non-bottled drinking water was done in accordance with the highest international, regional and Gulf standards, including the standards of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the standards of the Gulf Cooperation Council Standardization Organization (GSO), noting that the update was also done after coordination with all relevant authorities, in a manner that is consistent with the nature and quality of water in the Kingdom.
