Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah affirmed that the brutal genocide being perpetrated against Gaza is the greatest test of the international system, stressing the urgent need to move forward with all available means to end the suffering of the Palestinian people in a realistic, humane and just manner.
During his chairmanship yesterday of the Kingdom’s delegation participating in the Cairo Ministerial Conference on Humanitarian Aid to Gaza, the Foreign Minister pointed out that the repercussions of the current escalation and the expansion of the conflict regionally threaten the dangerous possibility of reaching a comprehensive war that is difficult to contain. He noted that the humanitarian crisis in Palestine has reached an intolerable level, and the situation in the region cannot be allowed to deteriorate further, as nearly 44,000 Palestinians have lost their lives at the hands of the barbaric war machine, more than 100,000 have been injured, and about 350,000 are living in catastrophic and inhumane conditions.
Prince Faisal bin Farhan explained that the perpetration of massacres against children, women, and the elderly, the destruction of infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, the policy of repression, siege, and forced displacement affecting nearly two million people, and the confiscation of Palestinian lands by the Israelis perpetuate suffering, fuel extremism in the region, expand the scope of the conflict, and undermine the chances of coexistence and sustainable peace. He described the expansion of illegal settlements in the West Bank and the measures affecting the legal and historical status of Jerusalem as direct attacks on international law and threats to the two-state solution. He called for an end to these measures to avoid prolonging the cycle of violence and destruction, reiterating the importance of an immediate and permanent ceasefire, acting responsibly to protect lives and property, making every possible effort to prevent the spread of violence, activating accountability mechanisms, ending the policy of impunity and double standards, and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid without hindrance.
The Foreign Minister expressed the Kingdom’s strong condemnation of the collapse of humanitarian work in the Palestinian territories and the undermining of the foundations of the international system through Israeli attacks on UN personnel and agencies, including UNRWA and UNIFIL, noting that the Israeli Knesset’s approval of a law prohibiting UNRWA from carrying out its activities in Israel will have disastrous consequences for the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
He affirmed that the Kingdom has spared no effort or delay in providing aid and assistance to the victims of the Israeli attacks, as the total amount of programs and projects provided by the Kingdom in the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the crisis until now has exceeded 500 million riyals, and the volume of in-kind assistance provided by the Kingdom to the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip has exceeded 6,600 tons of food, shelter materials, medicines, medical supplies and ambulances.
The Foreign Minister said: The tragic situation in the region compels us to exert more efforts to prevent the expansion of the conflict, address the root causes of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and create the conditions for the return of stability and a real prospect for a return to serious and effective negotiations to achieve peace in accordance with the two-state solution, relevant international resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative, which guarantees the Palestinian people their right to establish their independent state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Recognition of the State of Palestine and the Palestinians’ right to self-determination is an inherent right and a responsibility that entails the security of the region and the credibility and legitimacy of the international system. He stressed the importance of adhering to international law and relevant international resolutions, especially UN Security Council Resolution 2735 concerning the ceasefire in Gaza and Security Council Resolution 2334 concerning the cessation of illegal Israeli settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The conference was attended by Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, Advisor at the Royal Court and General Supervisor of the King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Aid, Saleh Al-Hussaini, Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to the Arab Republic of Egypt, and Abdulrahman Al-Dawood, Director General of the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
