Health Ministry warns: Dispensing slimming injections and antibiotics without a prescription is prohibited
The Ministry of Health is intensifying its monitoring to prevent the dispensing of slimming injections and antibiotics without a prescription, warning of serious health risks and legal penalties for violating facilities.
As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance pharmaceutical security and protect public health, the Saudi Ministry of Health has reiterated its strong warnings against dispensing controlled medications, particularly weight-loss injections and antibiotics, without a valid prescription from a licensed physician. The Ministry emphasized that it will continue its intensive monitoring campaigns of pharmaceutical establishments to ensure full compliance with the health regulations and laws in force in the Kingdom.
Intensive monitoring campaigns to regulate the drug market
The ministry explained that these measures stem from its regulatory and supervisory role to promote the safe and rational use of medications. It emphasized that dispensing prescription drugs, particularly weight-loss medications which have recently seen a surge in popularity, as well as antibiotics, is a red line that cannot be crossed. This stricter stance comes at a time when the misuse of medications for cosmetic or therapeutic purposes without direct medical supervision has increased, endangering the lives of those who use them.
Context of health risks: Why the warning now?
These warnings are particularly important in the current medical context, where the indiscriminate use of "weight-loss injections" has become widespread among various segments of society in search of quick results, without regard for medical history or potential side effects. Experts emphasize that using these injections without a thorough medical evaluation can lead to serious health complications, including severe gastrointestinal disturbances, sudden drops in blood sugar levels, and potential effects on thyroid and pancreatic function.
On the other hand, the indiscriminate dispensing of antibiotics poses a threat to national and global health security, as the excessive and unjustified use of these drugs contributes to the exacerbation of the phenomenon of "bacterial resistance to antibiotics," making the treatment of simple infectious diseases extremely difficult in the future, which is what the health system in the Kingdom seeks to address firmly.
Legal responsibility and penalties
The Ministry of Health emphasized that dispensing these medications without a prescription is a clear violation of the regulations governing the practice of healthcare professions. The regulations prohibit pharmacists from dispensing medication except with a valid prescription. The Ministry stressed that any observed violations will subject healthcare practitioners and facilities to strict penalties, which may include fines and license revocation.
An invitation to the community and practitioners
The ministry concluded its statement by urging all healthcare practitioners and pharmaceutical establishments to fully comply with regulations. It also called on members of the community to be partners in oversight by purchasing medications only with a valid prescription and by immediately reporting any observed violations through the unified call center 937, thus supporting oversight efforts and ensuring everyone's safety.
