Values in the realm of digitalization
As life guides us towards ways in which we can grasp its mysterious motives and intertwined systems, it provides us with many
While life guides us towards the ways in which we can grasp its mysterious motives and intertwined systems, it provides us, through many irrefutable arguments and proofs, with a clear vision of its eternal dynamism and its continuous need to change its fabric. Its constant transformations are known not only as a cosmic law that must inevitably proceed, but as an original substance that forms its structure and extends far to connect with human affairs and its relationship with its surroundings. Therefore, the connection of its transformations with the systems and relationships of social life that arise and take shape in its space to take from it its new characteristics and send them deep into its fabric is an organic connection that imposes change not only in social reality but even in the collective mind. It also assumes submission, albeit relatively, to the feelings of anxiety and tension that weigh on the individual’s mind and push him towards embracing vague values that lead him to engage in manifestations that he does not approve of to a degree that exceeds the degree that change assumes towards its inevitability.
Therefore, what we see of moral and behavioral deviations among some segments of our society are like side effects, like those caused by diseases, affecting ways of thinking, methods of access, and seizing spots of light. In light of our collective certainty that the value and reality of man lies in his commitment to the value controls and moral systems imposed by religion, assumed by customs, and approved by reason, and our societal belief in the importance of our pursuit of perfection, harnessing the gifts of change to cross expected limits towards the expansion of awareness and the breadth of knowledge, not towards spiritual wandering and cognitive fragility that promotes formal appearances at the expense of the essence, there are those who imagine that there is no way to alleviate our anxiety and reduce our tension except by setting aside our illusions about perfection and practicing behaviors closely related to superficiality and triviality, believing that they are two intrinsic parts of the nature of life and man.
While the quality of life, intellectual growth, scientific and cognitive prosperity, and development that we experience implicitly drive the creation of progressive manifestations and the growth of positive phenomena in our society, the greater part of what we witness today and see through social media platforms, which are a mirror of societies, is the exact opposite of that. Its prevalence indicates that there is a superficial societal understanding of the philosophy of change. It has driven today's man to devote most of his attention to acquiring popular labels and packaged praises, without caring about their quality. As his burning desire to win both grows, his certainty increases that he only needs a small effort to accumulate many naive ideas and successive documentation of what he has cultivated from a fragile halo of light until he gathers a spot that satisfies the ego that has been inflated by the change in life in his mind, so that he can argue with his reality and his society through it.
Although he complies with this because of the ease and convenience of obtaining them in contrast to the need for strenuous effort and hard work that was required to seize the meager opportunities that life previously offered and the genuine praise and well-deserved accolades that followed, as is the case in his response to the weakness inherent in his human nature towards the light, he overlooks the fragility of what emanates from him and ignores the opinion of wisdom in what he says and does, and even turns his back on the solid ground that preserves his stability and firmness, heading towards a soft and weak bottom.
Through many actions and statements that demonstrate their emptiness, those who practice them constantly prove that they are unaware of their own worth and values, and that they are unaware of their role in their society, and therefore they are not trustworthy regarding its image, which is reflected through the most popular content.
Just as humans have a nature that tends to bring ideas into existence, ideas have the ability to be shaped according to what the need requires, regardless of how foolish they may seem or how lacking in depth they may be. Therefore, they slip and spread very quickly. However, selecting the appropriate and controlled ones from them is an individual responsibility imposed by a person’s awareness of the seriousness and importance of the role he plays in preserving the values of his society, protecting its principles, preventing the distortions that may affect them, and the unsustainable behaviors that grow and expand, and his belief in all of that beforehand.
Life teaches us countless times that the behaviors of primal, untamed humans, or parts thereof, may reappear in pristine garb and refined forms. This is because their inclinations and desires remain dormant, fortified by their piety and feigned devotion, waiting for opportune moments to forcefully and fiercely transgress norms and prohibitions, heedless of the consequences. This produces many crude manifestations that intersect with some of what we see on social media platforms—scenes that invade our culture and values, disregarding our reservations, determined to create new social norms and establish low standards by which status is measured. These prevailing practices of self-expression debase generosity and chivalry, molding them into mere advertising products rather than transcendent virtues. They thrust private matters into the public eye, reducing humor and wit to the level of vulgarity. In terms of their implications and consequences, they in no way reflect what keeping pace with change and seizing the opportunities it presents should entail. Instead, they lead us down a moral and ethical slippery slope where error becomes indistinguishable. And that's correct.
A despicable rush towards the spotlight, and a pretense and perhaps a falsification of the individual’s potential to elevate him to the position he desires, and a boldness that clashes with the taste of society and insists on circumventing it in order to penetrate its mind and inject it with the dopamine of the spotlight, isolating it from the true image of the advanced and developed human being.
There is no dispute about the inevitability of change in cultural and societal structures and their frequent transgression to the point of reshaping them. However, stopping their expansion towards producing manifestations and phenomena that are not palatable to values requires competing with them in a way that reflects the reality of our society. This is the role of every individual who realizes that the distinctiveness of the Saudi person is not only in his ability to achieve and develop, but also in his preservation of his values, his retention of his customs, and his keeping them as a moral beacon to be followed.
