In a move reflecting the growing cultural and artistic movement in Saudi Arabia, the Visual Arts Forum at the Jeddah Literary Society organized a specialized workshop in the visual arts entitled "The Aesthetics of Impressionism." The three-day workshop was presented by the esteemed visual artist Emad Al-Sahafi and was part of a series of specialized programs launched by the Society to refine talents and support both emerging and established artists.

Impressionism: From World History to Local Reality

This workshop was more than just technical training; it was a revival of a rich artistic heritage. Impressionism, which originated in 19th-century France, revolutionized art history by focusing on capturing light and its subtle variations, rather than rigid, realistic details. Through this workshop, the Jeddah Literary Club sought to connect local artists with these deep artistic roots, thereby enriching visual culture and integrating international schools of art with a contemporary vision into the Saudi art scene.

The philosophy of light and the liberation of the brush

Artist Emad Al-Sahafi explained that the workshop transcended the concept of a literal reproduction of reality, aiming instead to deepen the understanding of Impressionism as a "feeling" that precedes its status as an artistic style. The practical experience focused on the philosophy of light and shadow, and on treating color as an emotional state that expresses the artist's inner world. The exercises also included liberating the brush from the constraints of excessive geometric precision, encouraging participants to embrace free expression, overcome their fear of artistic error, and even transform this spontaneous mistake into an aesthetic element that enhances the painting.

Institutional support for the art movement

Speaking about institutional support, the journalist said, “I extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to the Jeddah Literary Society, represented by its president, Dr. Abdullah Awaiqil Al-Sulami, for its keen interest in the visual arts and its continuous commitment to holding workshops, courses, and exhibitions that directly contribute to enriching the visual arts movement in the region.” He added, praising the attendees, “I thank everyone who attended and participated, and praise be to God for the success of this workshop, which provided a genuine space for artistic experimentation and discovery.”.

The journalist pointed out that the artistic outputs of the workshop reflected a remarkable development among the participants, which was clearly evident in the bold use of color and the honest visual sense, stressing that when an artist possesses a deep understanding before the tool, he creates with his own style and unique imprint.

Wide participation and positive interaction

The workshop witnessed a remarkable turnout, with the participation of about 30 male and female artists from various artistic directions, namely: Mohammed Hijazi, Saeed Al-Zahrani, Ali Jilan, Rima Al-Sayed, Noha Al-Hamdan, Afaf Musairi, Sahar Balbaid, Badour Al-Ghamdi, Samar Al-Aqeel, Inas Keifi, Rania Awad, Sanaa Jaber, Suzan Sabbagh, Abeer Musairi, Batoul Aqili, Reham Khalil, Najat Ali, Nadia Badahman, Alaa Al-Zahrani, Balqis Bin Saqr, Taghreed Hakami, Amal Kadsa, Amal Faisal, Thuraya Naji, Hanaa Natto, Ashwaq Al-Hazmi, Duaa Al-Balkhi, Aseel Al-Jadaani, Heba Jamea, and Hamida Al-Sahafi.

The workshop concluded its work amidst widespread praise from the participants, who affirmed that the experience was an intensive artistic journey that reintroduced Impressionism with a contemporary vision, and strengthened their belief that true art is what is felt and touches the heart before it is seen by the eye.
