Raja Al-Otaibi: "Tash" is not a drama but a documentary... and Abu Shal: The classification criteria are different
The King Abdulaziz Public Library held a seminar yesterday evening (Wednesday) entitled: “Creativity in Drama Production,” with the participation of a professor
The King Abdulaziz Public Library held a seminar yesterday evening (Wednesday) entitled: “Creativity in Drama Production”, with the participation of Dr. Abdulrahman Abu Shal, Assistant Professor in the Department of Performing Arts at King Saud University, and Raja Al-Otaibi, Lecturer in the Department of Cinema and Theater at the College of Media and Communication at Imam Muhammad bin Saud University. The seminar was moderated by media personality Hind Al-Salem.
The symposium discussed the concept of drama and its stages of development between the beginnings, the current reality and the future outlook, the use of dramatic text to produce creative content, the cultural heritage in Saudi drama and enriching artistic content within the goals of Vision 2030, creativity in drama and returning to the sources of drama and its history.
Al-Otaibi: Drama is fiction, not reality
Raja Al-Otaibi believes that there is a great deal of confusion regarding the concept of drama, as they call films drama, series drama, and theater drama, and that there is controversy or conflict about the concepts, even though there is a term that has been used for 2500 years.
He said: Students graduate with different concepts, although the theater in the Aristotelian concept is different from today’s theater and its schools, and what is performed on the stage is not drama. The plays written by Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides constituted the theater, and when Aristotle came, he saw that writers imitate reality, and this is something (imaginary), and the imaginary is an imitation to build a world in the mind in a dramatic way, and if we understand imitation, we cannot write a film or a series.
Al-Otaibi explained that the dramatic hero in the theory of imitation discusses his own problems, not the problems of others or the problems of society. Theater is a narrative that then turns into movement and into drama, and drama means action and movement.
He added: “Guiding people is not drama, and the series (Tash Ma Tash), for example, is not drama. Dramatic work is fiction and simulation, it has no relation to reality, and realistic series are not drama, but rather commercial works.”.
Raja Al-Otaibi concluded by saying: “Real-life stories are documentary works that deal with people’s problems, but fictional works are the real drama, and we want a generation to emerge that understands the true meaning of drama.”.
Abu Shal: The standards for drama are specific
Dr. Abdul Rahman Abu Shal spoke about the standards of drama, its elements, and dramatic structure. He saw that there are several standards that we can benefit from in the stage of conveying ideas, and the standards of influential works include: simplicity, credibility, emotions and the use of emotional language, stories, clarity, strangeness, and defining the character, who can be identified through dialogue or appearance. These standards increase its impact on the mind of the recipient.
Abu Shal explained that the presence of evidence and statistics that reinforce the idea is involved in the dramatic work, and we see that the character is a real character, and the dramatic cinematic language is refined, improved, directed and intentional, contrary to daily improvisation, with the language of the body, and the language of the character that embodies a real value for this character. As for the dramatic elements, they are the plot, the character, the subject, the statement, the music and sound effects, the scene and the visual effects.

Asmaa Jalal files a complaint against Ramez Jalal with the Public Prosecutor regarding the "Level of the Beast" program
Details of Asmaa Galal's complaint against Ramez Galal to the Public Prosecutor regarding the violations of the "Level of the Monster" program. Learn about the accusations leveled against Ramez Galal, including defamation, bullying, and suggestive remarks.
In a significant development within the Egyptian art scene, lawyer Nihad Abu El-Qomsan, representing actress Asmaa Galal, announced that she has taken formal legal action against Ramez Galal, the popular prank show host. An official complaint has been filed with the Attorney General regarding the content of the actress's episode on the show "Level of the Monster," which aired during last Ramadan. This move reopens the debate surrounding the excesses of Ramadan prank shows.
Details of the report and legal review
In an official statement issued by her office, Abu Al-Qumsan confirmed that the legal action was taken after a thorough review and complete transcription of the episode in question. She explained, "With reference to what has been circulating regarding an episode of the entertainment program, the office has transcribed the entire episode and reviewed it legally in light of the provisions of the Penal Code and the laws regulating media in Egypt." She indicated that the careful examination revealed violations that cannot be classified within the framework of artistic or entertainment work.
Accusations of slander, bullying, and verbal harassment
According to the complaint, the episode included repeated insults and personal attacks directed at the artist Asmaa Galal, as well as bullying comments and explicit sexual innuendo. The statement also noted that psychological pressure and coercion were exerted through questions about her private life, posed under duress during the prank. The lawyer emphasized that these actions were carried out publicly through a widely disseminated media outlet, thus removing them from the realm of humor and placing them within the scope of legally punishable offenses.
Context of prank shows and annual controversy
This incident comes amidst the recurring annual controversy surrounding Ramez Galal's programs. Over the years, these programs have achieved record viewership ratings both locally and regionally, yet they consistently spark sharp divisions. While some consider them essential Ramadan entertainment, others, including critics and media experts, believe they cross red lines regarding the dignity of guests and standards of psychological and physical safety. This complaint makes this latest episode in the series of legal challenges facing these types of programs.
Accepting the prank doesn't mean accepting the insult
Nihad Abu El-Qomsan emphasized a crucial legal point: an artist's initial agreement to participate in an entertainment or prank show does not, under any circumstances, constitute an open license to be subjected to insults or have their reputation and honor damaged. She clarified that any waiver of prosecution signed by a guest does not extend to actions criminalized under Egyptian law, nor does it prevent the initiation of criminal proceedings, as it is impermissible to agree to violate the law.
Impact of the incident on media standards
This legal action carries particular significance that transcends the personal dispute between the two parties, as it highlights the necessity for entertainment content creators to adhere to ethical and professional standards. The concluding statement emphasized artist Asmaa Jalal's complete respect for the media industry and its practitioners, affirming that resorting to the judiciary is a civilized means of establishing the professional and human boundaries that must be respected, and ensuring that artistic work is not confused with violations of privacy and human dignity.
